As you've probably noticed, many a carmaker has alternative names that car journalists use when they've already used its real name twice in the sentence. Most of the time, these are names referring to what's in the logo of the manufacturer or simply the name of the town from which it originates.

How many can we name, fellow opponauts ? Here are, in no particular order because it's late, the few I can remember, feel free to suggest more ! Keep in mind that some of these are nicknames I've seen used in French, but I'm not sure if they're used in English has well. We call BMW " L'Hélice " (The Propeller) for example, because of the logo, but I've never seen it in English language car magazines.

BMW : Munich, The Propeller.

Renault : La Régie, Billancourt, The Diamond.

Peugeot : Sochaux, The Lion.

Audi : Ingolsdadt, The Rings.

Mercedes : The Star.

VW : Wolfsburg.

Citroën : Le Quai de Javel, The Chevrons.

Lambroghini : Sant'Agata, The Raging Bull.

Ferrari : Maranello, The Prancing Horse.

Aston Martin : Gaydon.

Bentley : Crewe, The Flying B.

Alpine : Dieppe.

Got any more ?

Never heard (or read) "L'hélice" being used by a French journalist. As for nicknames using the city of origin, the name of the city is (in French) following "Le constructeur de ..." (literally "The maker from...").

Not really, I've often seen just "Ingolstadt" (man that's impossible to spell) or "Gaydon", even more just "Maranello" being used to refer to a carmaker.

As for BMW I've seen "le constructeur à l'hélice" quite a few times.

Yeah, you're right, I see it now.

They would also use the adjective of the name of the city. For BMW it would be "Le munichois", or the name of the country like "le britanique" for a british car maker.
